Anti-gay Called2Action wielding pressure in Raleigh

by Matt | June 22nd, 2006 |

Some of you may remember a post I put up back in April when the horribly outspoken anti-gay group Called2Action geared up to fight the presence of the Day of Silence in North Carolina schools. The group, which is based in Raleigh, had sent out an alert to all its members telling them to call their children’s schools and urge their children to participate in the anti-gay, reactionary “Day of Truth.”

You may also remember the 11th Anti-Gay Politician’s Watch, when I posted on an article detailing how the wolf in lamb’s clothing Chris Mintz had aligned himself with this group and other right-wing, anti-gay groups in the past. It must be said, however, that Mintz isn’t the only politician or elected official sucking up to the group; numerous elected officials are either directors or advisory council members of the group.

Called2Action is now making waves again. It seems as though the group is no longer intent in just exerting pressure with their prejudiced, anti-gay agenda. They are now pushing for a bill which would require schools to make students recite the pledge of allegiance. Click on over to a post by Anglico on BlueNC.com for more info (Hat Tip: Ed Cone).

Although I don’t really see a problem with students reciting the pledge, I do see a problem in requiring students to do it (because not all students should have to if they don’t want to - freedom of speech, you know?).

I also see a HUGE problem with this group exerting their pressure in and around Raleigh. In this state, there should be absolutely no room whatsoever for anti-gay, right-wing, fundamentalist groups like Called2Action. These groups are not only dangerous to the freedoms our precious governing documents so delicately protect and gaurantee, but they are also a sign of what is really wrong with the “Religious Right” (of which such people are usually neither “religious” or “right,” but simply so prejudiced to the point of being blind to humanity, compassion and, least of all, our nation’s supposed rock-solid promise of equality, justice and liberty).

What really upsets me, like Anglico, is that my Democratic representatives are the ones who might just be bowing to this group’s pressure. Where are the real morals? Where are the Democrats who will stand up for what is right, instead of taking sides with a group that does nothing but promote intolerance, hate and prejudice?

It saddens me to think that such a group is actually being listened to and taken seriously in the state’s capital. If Called2Action had their way North Carolina would be nothing but one, big, church-controlled theocracy with every citizen proclaiming allegiance to God, hate and contempt of LGBT people and the denial of freedom and equality for everyone seen as “different” or “un-Godly.”

PS - For laughs, take a look-see at Called2Actions “Get to know our online neighbors” page. It is filled with links to LGBT organizations and calls on people to “educate themselves” on the “disturbing and subversive” content of the “homosexual agenda.” Unlike Vernon Robinson’s links list, my blog (as well as the NC Advocacy Coalition) site aren’t listed… but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were put up there someday.

  2. I wanted to clear up a misunderstanding on the Pledge of Allegiance bill. It requires the schools to offer the Pledge every day in every grade…it does not require students to stand, salute or recite the Pledge.

  3. Thanks for your comment. I had actually read this elsewhere, however… your clarification still does not do anything to my fear of your group wielding so much influence in North Carolina’s state government and local governments.
