Duke LGBT Center to celebrate top listing

by Matt | August 26th, 2006 |

According to the Durham Herald-Sun, the Duke University Center for LGBT Life will hold an open house and celebration of its recent top, number 2 listing on the 100 best LGBT-friendly college campuses in the nation.

Duke received the number 2 spot in the recently released Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students, which was written and compiled by Charlotte native Shane Windmeyer.

The celebration and open house will be held at 4pm on Monday, August 28, 2006. For more information see http://lgbt.studentaffairs.duke.edu.

Duke had been, at one time, listed as one of the worst campuses in the nation by the Princeton Review. NC State University received the number 16 spot in the Princeton Review’s list of the worst LGBT-friendly campuses this year. UNC-Chapel Hill was the only other school to make a national LGBT-related list of best or worst colleges. It was ranked in the Advocate’s top 100 best LGBT-friendly campuses with Duke University. UNCG did not make a national LGBT-related list of colleges or universities.

  2. As an old friend of Kerry Poynter, the Assistant Director of the Center of LGBT Life at Duke, I can say that I am not surprised in the positive rankings. While getting his Masters in Student Affairs here at Western Michigan University, he worked part time as a director of the LGBT center at WMU. In addition to this he was heavily involved in the local chapter of Delta Lambda Phi, as was I. He is committed to the affairs of all LGBTQ persons and the recent Advocate rankings certainly reflect this. I believe I owe him a congratulatory e-mail for his efforts.
