Anti-gay resolution un-necessary; State & citizens should focus on more important matters.THOMASVILLE, NC – The North Carolina Advocacy Coalition (NCAC), a section 527 state and local political action committee focused on local and grassroots advocacy and activism on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues, is urging the Thomasville City Council to vote “No” on a proposed resolution which would call on North Carolina state legislators to send an anti-marriage amendment to voters.
On Monday, October 16, 2006, the Thomasville City Council will vote on the resolution being presented by Councilmembers Dwight Cornelison and Raleigh York, Jr.
The resolution, in part, reads: “the undersigned members of the Thomasville City Council ask the North Carolina General Assembly to allow the citizens of our state… the opportunity to amend our State Constitution to protect the institution of marriage in the state of North Carolina and define the type of marriage to be recognized as valid in our state.”
The resolution is being pushed and backed by the Reverend Ron Baity, pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC. Baity was also involved in pushing a similar resolution which failed in a 4-3 vote by the Davidson County Board of Commissioners last year.
“This resolution calls for voting on an amendment that is pure discrimination directed squarely at gay and lesbian citizens of North Carolina” stated NCAC Executive Director Matt Hill Comer, “Other than writing discrimination into our precious state Constitution and discriminating against thousands of its citizens, there are more important issues to be dealt with by state and local legislators.”
With issues such as the rising cost of state-supported healthcare, problems with the graduation rate and drop-out rate in North Carolina high schools and the continual, rising cost of higher education for both North Carolina students and the taxpayers, local and state legislators should not waste their time in hearing business which serves only to perpetuate anti-gay prejudice.
NCAC Board members and supporters will be present at the Monday, October 16th meeting of the Thomasville City Council. They plan on speaking against the resolution during the Council’s public forum section of the agenda. The meeting begins at 7:00pm on the second floor of the Police Building,
