Last week’s missing Carolinian column found: ‘NC State rears its ugly, red, anti-gay face’
Yay. Finally. It was supposed to be in last week’s paper but there was a mix-up and it is in this week’s paper. I had provided a sneak peek a couple of weeks ago.
So… Without further ado:
N.C. State’s ugly, red, anti-gay face
LGBT student center need is proven
Matt Hill Comer, Don’t Ask (I’m Telling)
Issue date: 11/7/06 Section: Opinions
Note from the editor: The column that ran under Matt Hill Comer’s name last week was not representative of him or his opinions as it was in fact a piece written by Paul McNeill for a previous edition of this paper. We are running Matt’s intended column this week. The Carolinian apologizes for this error.
On Wednesday, Oct. 18, the NC State Student Senate voted 29 for and 14 against the support of establishing a campus center for LGBT students. The Senate proposal was based partly on an official University proposal for such a center.
The University proposal was prompted by NC State’s recent number 17 spot on Princeton Review’s list of the campuses most un-friendly and un-safe for LGBT students. The proposal also outlined an internal NC State study of the campus’ climate for LGBT students and noted the increased rate of suicide for LGBT students, as compared to their straight peers.
When news of the Senate decision broke in the next day’s Technician, student debate quickly spread across campus, and even across the state, as the issue was discussed by some of the delegates to a state-wide College Republicans gathering.
A good part of the debate is taking place online. Students have done what students do best: They created a Facebook group, entitled “Students against NCSU LGBT center.” At first, the debate was focused on money. Some students said they thought using student fees to build an LGBT center was unnecessary (about half of the $200,000 start up cost for the center will come from NC State’s student affairs department).
It didn’t take long, however, for NC State to show its ugly, red, anti-gay face. The flood gates were opened and the true feelings came pouring out like a river (all the improper grammar and typos belong to the authors, not me):
“i think the real purpose of this fag house is to pass out anal lube. Plus people that are gay chose that path and since when do chosen minorities get their own fuckin building. im mad that nc state was the 17th most unapplealing to homos, i believe we should strive to be first,” said student Eric Dobbins.
“I don’t give a fuck who funds the damn thing.i don’t think we should give fags a fucking building to themselves on campus. I don’t see why they need their own fucking building. What are they gonna do with it.have orgies?” asked student David Percival.
Student Ryan Jennings had this point to add: “Asking money from my pocket to fund this project is just like asking money from everyone who is enrolled at NC State to construct a Satan worshiping center.”
Student Jonathan Paul decided to pull from the old GOP playbook: “if the lesbians, gays and bisexuals get a building than people who are into beastiality, pedophilia, and convicted felons should also get a building amirite?!?!”
Student Ishma Pinckney made the following comment: “we as christian have a obligation to be solidiers for christ and fight against anything ungodlyif we stand by and say nothing just to get along instead of being evangelist for christ our faith will be the same as all sinners not just the LGBT We must rise up to the occasion and stand for christ even if we stand alone.”
Pinkney also quoted Leviticus 20:13, while adding stress on the word “death” by capitalizing it: “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to DEATH; their blood will be on their own heads.”
Ever know a straight guy who liked hot lesbians? Well, your friend isn’t alone; Allan Paul, an NC State staff member thinks there should be a “Hot lesbian center with 24/7 webcam service.”Oh, I see. Gay people are fine as long as they are lesbians and straight men can get off, right?
The horribly, extremely bigoted (it isn’t a word I use too often anymore) and prejudiced comments made by both students and staff at NC State does nothing but further prove NC State needs some serious help when it comes to how LGBT students are treated, respected and accepted as a part of its University community and as fellow human beings.
The Student Senate was 100% correct in passing its resolution in support of the LGBT center. Shame on the 14 Senators who voted against it. Shame on the students and staff who are happily and openly bashing gay students.
There are rumors that the NC State Student Senate will hold a “town hall” type meeting on the LGBT center in November. If you hear about it and have a chance to go, I urge that you do. Of course, you can expect NC State’s ugly, red, anti-gay face to be popping up during the meeting. Maybe someone should record it and when someone takes up Pinckney’s insinuation that gay people should be put to “DEATH,” the recording can be used as evidence of NC State’s extremely un-safe environment for LGBT students.
Thank God I came to UNCG.

that’s not a good thing

Thanks Dobeda. I truly hope that if your brother or sister or aunt or uncle or cousin or even your parents or one of your friends come out to you, then you will learn quickly that maybe gay people aren’t all the bad you’ve learned they supposedly are.
Either that or you are gay yourself and you’ll eventually stop the self-loathing and hate. As proven by the Reverend Ted Haggard… the ones who hate the most are usually gay themselves.
Have a nice day and don’t forget to go vote!

It is so very sad, Jonathan, that you can be so very proud of such a hateful and harmful comparison of normal, healthy citizens to those with mental disorders and those who are criminals.
