Why all the fuss?

by Matt | November 24th, 2006 |

Winston doesn’t have this problem. Forsyth County doesn’t have this problem. I can remember only ONE TIME in my life that I have seen the City Councilmembers in Winston get a little out of hand in how they related to one another and that was quickly settled (as the voters quickly kicked out the misbehaving members of the Council).

My question is this: Why all the fuss? Why are the leaders of Guilford County and the City of Greensboro (council pictured right) constantly fighting and bickering with each other. Why are they wasting the taxpayers’ money and time? If they want to fight and argue, point fingers, call each other racists, leak confidential documents, so on and so on… Why don’t they just do it on their own time? They don’t need to have a meeting of the City Council or County Commissioners to fight. Just go to the closest bar and have your brawl there.

Looking from the outside in, it just seems as though the ONLY thing being accomplished in the Guilford County and Greensboro leadership is fighting and arguing. They need to get their act together and remember why they were put into leadership in the first place.

They certainly weren’t put there to argue with each other and act like children.

Grow up or get out.

It is the same message that has been told to the leadership at UNCG’s Student Government: Grow up or get out… we didn’t elect you to fight.

If college students are able to say that to leaders of their own government, why can’t the people of Greensboro and Guilford County say it to their leaders?

We took it seriously at UNCG and the leadership of Greensboro and Guilford County should take it seriously now.

Grow up or get out.

  2. I don’t recall any city council member calling another a racist.

  3. “…the leaders of Guilford County and the City of Greensboro..”

The post was referring to both the Guilford County Commissioners and City Council of Greensboro. If my memory serves me right, I do recall Yow and Alston getting into a word-throwing match.

Even so… members of the community leadership (be it city and/or county) need to realize that it isn’t their job to fight and argue; it is their job to bridge the gaps, stop the fighting, lead the city and county, build the economy, provide for quality education, safeguard a quality standard of living, so on and so on.

Like I said in my post… It just seems to me that all that our community leaders seem to be doing nowadays is fighting and bickering with each other. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe it looks different from the inside out, as I am currently looking from the outside in. Really, though, the “outside in” look is all that really matters in my opinion. Elected leaders serve at the will of the public and how the public views them is really all that counts.

  4. Get Real.
Do we want open government where members of the City Council discuss and debate ideas in public or do we want back room decisions where the citizens don’t know what’s happening until it’s too late?
And - we do have a way to remove representatives that we don’t want. There is a Greensboro City election every other year and Guilford County Commissioners are elected for four-year terms on a rotating basis so that the entire commission doesn’t change every election.
If you don’t like your representatives (you have 4 on the city council), then support someone whom you think will do a better job. Tell everyone you know about your candidate, give money to their campaign and help make change happen. Or, run for office yourself if you think you can do a better job.

BTW: I listened to your public radio interview. Very impressive.

I firmly believe that the best government is the government which is the most open, most honest and most connected to the people. Government in any form and at every level should be open and honest with the people. Decisions should be made in the public’s eye during public meetings.

On your comment concerning how to get rid of elected officials who don’t do their job: What if we don’t want them now? Should people just wait ’till the next election or make sure that, right now, they send a strong message of Grow up or get out (read: resign).
