Grey’s Anatomy, GLSEN & No Name-Calling Week

by Matt | January 22nd, 2007 |

This week, Monday, January 22 - Friday, January 26, 2007, marks No Name-Calling Week, a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

According to the National No Name-Calling Week website, the project “is an annual week of educational activities aimed at ending name-calling of all kinds and providing schools with the tools and inspiration to launch an on-going dialogue about ways to eliminate bullying in their communities.”

I guess there isn’t a more perfect time for anti-gay slur-throwing Isaiah Washington of the hit ABC show Grey’s Anatomy to be meeting with GLSEN’s executive director (and Winston-Salem, NC-native) Kevin Jennings, now is there?

According to a January 20th article from The Washington Post, Washington will be meeting with Jennings today, Monday, January 22, 2007, at the beginning of National No Name-Calling Week:

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network said Friday that Washington plans to meet with executive director Kevin Jennings on Monday, the first day of the organization’s “No Name-Calling Week.”

The day before the Post article, GLSEN released a press statement regarding No Name-Calling Week entitled, “Isaiah Washington’s Comments, Apology Highlight Need for GLSEN’s No Name-Calling Week, Jan. 22-26.”

I’m kind of curious, though: Did Jennings and GLSEN approach Washington or did Washington approach Jennings and GLSEN after the release of their press statement? Boy, how I’d love to just be a “fly on the wall” sometimes. I guess that’s just my nosey, gossippy Southern nature.

Organizational partners in GLSEN’s No-Name Calling Week include a myriad of organizations including, but definitely not limited to, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, National Association of School Nurses, National Association of School Psychologists, National Association of Secondary School Principals, National Association of Social Workers, National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE), National Conference for Community and Justice, National Education Association, National Mental Health Association, National Middle School Association and the National School Board Association.

New and unique room décor encourages no name-calling forever

Who would have thought National No Name-Calling Week would help kick off a new and unique character building children room décor company. Motivating Décor mission is to help children live their best life into adulthood. Our goal is to help promote good values, good manners, respect for self and others which encourages children not to name call, bully and more. As we know name calling can cause damaging effects in some children and scars them for life. Motivating Décor wants to encourage no name-calling and no bullying longer than a week.

We constantly hear and read parents are their child’s first teacher. Why surround your child with costly décor of TV pushed cartoon or Disney characters and personalities they will quickly out grow when you can provide children with a positive atmosphere of real character traits, personalities, affirmations, good words and good thoughts to set a good foundation that can positively change their life.

Educators want motivating décor that build good character, confidence and self-esteem.
Parents are now demanding motivational and inspirational character building room décor for their children.

Character education is so important that in 2001 a federal education law was approved for character education to be integrated into class instruction and extracurricular activities.
As we know building good character should start in the home. Motivating Décor’s inspirational and motivational décor can help you do just that. One mom and teacher said the Motivating Décor not only helps to motivate to be your best, but is an excellent point of reference as well.

Our fun and colorful decor is great for children of all ages and is excellent for bedrooms, classrooms, and child care centers. One never out grows the encouragement of the unique children room decor that enriches children with empowering words such as achieve, self-control, be thankful, you can do it, forgive, respect, you are loved, believe in yourself, I’m a winner and many more creatively displayed in three different wonderful collections. Incorporated in the designs are the six pillars of character which are the core ethical values from the foundation of the Josephson Institute of Ethics Character Counts.
