Greensboro Equality Ride Fundraiser: SUCCESS!

by Matt | February 17th, 2007 |

Last night I hosted “An Evening at the Biltmore,” a social benefiting the Soulforce Equality Ride, in which I’ll be participating (riding on the East bus) in March and April.

The Soulforce Equality Ride is a journey of 56 young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight ally activists who will travel across the entire continental United States, visiting 32 different religious colleges and universities with harmful and discrimnatory policies against gay and lesbian students and schools whose atmosphere places closeted gay students in the position to live their lives in fear, secrecy and oppression.

In all, we had about 20 people at the fundraiser and about 20 more who came along with the Triad Pride Men’s Chorus, who so graciously offered the time, talent and outstanding energy in performing for us.

A total of $450 was raised to benefit the Equality Ride.

It was absolutely wonderful seeing so many of my good friends and colleagues, as well as having the chance to meet so many new and bright faces, especially those members of the chorus.

Last night I put together a short video on the evening. It certainly isn’t the best, but if you missed it, you can catch up on a large part of what happened:

I must take the time to thank numerous people for making last night’s event such a success:

  • John Johnson & Eric Hinson, of the Biltmore Greensboro Hotel, who donated the wine, provided space in the lobby of the beautiful historic hotel and prepared the delicious refreshments
  • Gary Palmer, who provided his projector for a slide show and video
  • Leehe Shmueli, my good friend who came along with me to help with gathering donations, taking pictures and running the video camera
  • And, last, but certainly not least… The Triad Pride Men’s Chorus and all those who came out and attended!

If you missed the social on Friday, my next presentation will be on Sunday, February 18, 2007, at the Third Sunday Potluck of the Wake Forest Baptist Church Winston-Salem, NC. The Potluck will be held at 5:30pm (the program will begin at 6:00pm), in the Lower Auditorium of Wait Chapel/Wingate Hall, on the campus of Wake Forest University.

  2. Matt this is so weird that I have chills. Just as Triad Pride finished singing at the start of your piece my computer started playing Judy Collins’ Amazing Grace as a musical bed to your comments and the Q&A and ended just as Triad Pride started up again. This has to be an omen of some sort. I mean, it couldn’t have been more appropriate or perfect if you had done it intentionally when preparing the tape instead of just happening randomly the way it did. Amazing.
