Patrick McHenry & his lollipop like their young pals, especially when they’re drunk

by Matt | May 17th, 2007 |

Please see this important post: An interesting take on Lay, the facts as I know them and a ‘mea culpa’

Representative Patrick McHenry (NC-10) is in deep trouble again. This time it doesn’t have much to do with his McHenry-Lay Voter Fraud Scandal, but it still revolves around McHenry and his love for his young buddies.

A photo has surfaced of McHenry at a party he threw for his College/Young Republican supporters. McHenry, a large lollipop, underage college students and alcohol. Not a good mix.

Lollipop lollipop Oh lolli lolli lolli Lollipop lollipop

This guy just can’t catch a break.

According to concerned citizen:

Affidavits filed with the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement agency detail McHenry’s involvement with a party of underage students where beer and wine flowed after McHenry returned from the 2004 Catawba County Lincoln Day dinner. In the photo above Patrick accepts a large red sucker as his prize with the underage students in the background cheering him on with beers in hand.

The Catawba County event was marred by the McHenry camp as they violated the rules and bused in dozens of College Republicans from their annual convention being held up the road in Charlotte. Patrick was a speaker earlier at the College Republicans’ convention, and he rounded up the students afterwards to help him win the straw poll in Hickory, North Carolina (Is this sounding familiar?).

Afterwards many of the underage college Republicans returned to Charlotte where the victorious McHenry celebrated with the beer swigging teenagers. Later, the ALE was alerted to the underage drinking and ALE agent Scott Minderlein questioned those attending the event.

Make sure you read the rest.

Pat Go Bye-Bye points out that this just hasn’t been a good time for our good friend Patrick: First his good night-time pal Michael Aaron Lay gets indicted on voter fraud, then McHenry’s former chief of staff gets “outed” on DUI and manslaughter charges, and then there are the money laundering rumors.

Wow… This man can’t help himself.

  3. oh come on, sometimes a big, oversized rainbow-colored lollipop is just a lollipop.

OK, sometimes it means something else. Paging Dr. Freud…

  4. Oh no! I just realized it WAS you, Matt, who made the McHenry/drunk statement. But I’ll assume you’re not anti-Irish, and just couldn’t resist after seeing that bizarre huge lollipop pic (which I’d missed!)

  5. Sam… I don’t do it very often, lol.

Yes… Dr. Freud. Has anyone seen him lately?

I’m not anti-Irish (I don’t think)… but the whole drinking with underage students while trying to run for Congress. Not a good idea, Irish or not.

  6. Matt: You’re pretty good with subduing the Eirophobia, considering how much it was probably drilled into you. You impress me as someone who makes his own decisions and greatly bases it on personal experience. But, yes, what was that guy thinking drinking with underaged students?! That behavior is usually for the slacking “bad neighbor” on the block (”hey, let’s go to his house! we can drink over there”) rather than a future Congressman.

I really like Europe, actually. I take very proudly and am very loyal to my strong Dutch and English heritage. I’ve even got a small Dutch flag in my room!

  8. In Californina you can be charged for “Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor” merely for giving a cigarette to someone under 18. Surely N. Carolina has a comparable law that would look equally as spectacular on the resume of a member of the Congress of the United States of America… ESPECIALLY if he was a member when he committed the crime!

  9. As a Brit just surfing by (as one does!) I find it quite amusing that College age students are referred to as “underage” ! If they are at College then surely they are 18+ ? All perfectly legal over here in the old country. Is this in one of those states where you have to be 76 to buy a “magazine” - but you can drive and buy a gun at 12 ? Enjoying the story by the way, your fella does seem a bit odd.

  10. “Underage college students” in America is widely known as referring to college students who are not yet 21 years of age: the legal age at which one may buy alcohol.

“Minors” or just “underage” by itself is widely known as referring to individuals who have not yet reached 18 years of age: the age at which one becomes a “legal adult.”

In North Carolina one must be 16 to drive (although with a limited license that can be taken away for any number of things including performing badly in school), 18 (or 21 to own a gun… I’m not sure on that one), 18 to enter into a legal contract, 18 to view “mature, adult content,” 18 to vote, 21 to drink and 21 to run for state office.

On a federal level, one must be 25 to run for the House of Representatives, 30 to run for the Senate and 35 to run for the Presidency.

  11. To clarify Matt’s comment above, you must be 21 years old with a reasonably clean criminal record to purchase a firearm in North Carolina legally.

By Brandon Greeson on May 26, 2007

  12. Thanks Brandon… I wasn’t sure if it was 18 or 21… and, yes, the “reasonably clean criminal record” is a good requirement to remember. :)

  13. You may find the new site republicansagainstpatrickmchenry.com interesting. Even the hardcore Republicans are sick of this guy- and that’s saying something, considering how ardently they defend other idiots.
