“Underage college students” in America is widely known as referring to college students who are not yet 21 years of age: the legal age at which one may buy alcohol.

“Minors” or just “underage” by itself is widely known as referring to individuals who have not yet reached 18 years of age: the age at which one becomes a “legal adult.”

In North Carolina one must be 16 to drive (although with a limited license that can be taken away for any number of things including performing badly in school), 18 (or 21 to own a gun… I’m not sure on that one), 18 to enter into a legal contract, 18 to view “mature, adult content,” 18 to vote, 21 to drink and 21 to run for state office.

On a federal level, one must be 25 to run for the House of Representatives, 30 to run for the Senate and 35 to run for the Presidency.

As a Brit just surfing by (as one does!) I find it quite amusing that College age students are referred to as “underage” ! If they are at College then surely they are 18+ ? All perfectly legal over here in the old country. Is this in one of those states where you have to be 76 to buy a “magazine” – but you can drive and buy a gun at 12 ? Enjoying the story by the way, your fella does seem a bit odd.

In Californina you can be charged for “Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor” merely for giving a cigarette to someone under 18. Surely N. Carolina has a comparable law that would look equally as spectacular on the resume of a member of the Congress of the United States of America… ESPECIALLY if he was a member when he committed the crime!

That behavior is usually for the slacking “bad neighbor” on the block (”hey, let’s go to his house! we can drink over there”) rather than a future Congressman.
