Catching up: A bit of news here, a bit of news there

In the past few days that I’ve been working on ScoutPride, I sure have missed a lot of news.

‘Gay=Pedophile’ GOP Chairman loses bid for state Chair
This weekend, the North Carolina Republican Party held its state convention. Thank God Almighty with all the heavenly hosts! Marcus Kindley, the Guilford County Republican chairman who once compared gays to pedophiles lost his race to become the State GOP Chairman. Linda Daves won. See CapBlog for more. You’ll remember that Kindley, Super Republibigot, already lost once in a bid for state chair. Sue Polinsky says she had hoped he would win.

Freedom to Marry ad campaign
Pam Spaulding brings us news of the new Freedom to Marry ad campaign. The campaign draws parallels to the fight for same-sex marriage from the Loving v. Virginia court case which allowed inter-racial marriage. Numerous LGBT organizations are helping to fund the campaign.

eHarmony: Discrimination Rejected
Someone got fed up and this time it isn’t a competing company deciding to put out some fancy “Rejected” ads. eHarmony, which does not allow same-sex dating on its site, has been sued by a California woman under the state’s extensive anti-discrimination act. PageOneQ has more and video from MSNBC.. The same California anti-discrimination act was used to stop the business in California from an anti-gay adoption website.

HRC releases results from Presidential Candidate Questionnaires
The Human Rights Campaign has released a score-card of results from Presidential candidates who filled out their candidate questionnaire. My darling John Edwards was the first to fill out the questionnaire, turn it in and have his original responses made public (see Pam’s House Blend for Edwards responses). Biden, Clinton, Dodd, Edwards, Kucinich, Obama and Richardson participated in the questionnaire. You can view the scorecard here.

Democratic Candidates support, speak on repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell
All of the Democratic candidates in the Democratic debate last night supported ending DADT. One even said (quite loudly), “We should have gotten rid of it 20 years ago!).”

Bush nominates anti-gay, ex-gay supporter as Surgeon General
The good folks of Soulforce are having a field-day discussing this one in their forums. President Bush has nominated a man with a long history of anti-gay stands and support for ex-gay therapy as the next Surgeon General. A United Methodist site has the full details. “Surgeon General’s Warning: Listening to this club music may turn you gay. Consult Exodus International for the cure.”

Okay… that is all for now.

  2. The HRC scorecard is disappointing. If all of those are accurate, it seems to me that the candidates understand that denying same-sex couples recognition, rights, and protections is unAmerican and wrong, but won’t say it.

I also wonder how much of a priority those issues will be. It’s easy to check off “Yes, I support that” in theory, it’s quite another thing to make sure they happen.

  3. Yup… you are right Brian… which is another thing that adds to my distrust of the Democrats, even though I am one. I wrote a bit about this a while back http://www.interstateq.com/archives/2091/

At least with the Republicans, you usually know exactly where they stand.

  5. I’ll vote for whoever/whatever party. I’m just disappointed in the Democrat candidates this time. (My opinion only, but with ALL the people in this country, they couldn’t give us better candidates?!). As of now it looks like I’ll be voting for a Republican.
