‘Well-rounded’ bigotry from good ole’ North Carolina shows up in Senate chamber
by Matt | July 12th, 2007 |So much for the “Freedom of Religion” the Right wing always talks about.
You’ll remember my post from yesterday, “At least their bigotry is well rounded,” in which I posted portions of an AMerican Family Association Action Alert email blasting the occurrence of the first-ever Hindu prayer offered on the floor of the Senate.
The prayer was given today… and it seems some folks with the astonishing assumption that they and they alone speak for God and Christ showed up to sit in the gallery, screaming “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” and “No Lord but Jesus Christ!” as the prayer began.
The presiding officer had order restored in the Senate chamber. The Right-wingers were quickly escorted out of the chamber, still screaming their bigotry, and arrested. They are in jail now… or maybe they are out now… who really cares. They disrupted the Senate during an activity that should have been respected, as dictated by our American ideals of religious freedom and liberty and the diversity from which this nation is formed. Remember… “From Many, One.”
Oh… by the way… The culprits of the outlandish, indecent behavior in the Senate chamber? None other than the ultra-conservative Operation Save America, led by the Reverend Flip Benham, and based out of Concord, NC (right near Charlotte).
Rev. Benham and his Operation Save America are no strangers to controversy and I’m certainly no stranger to their bigotry and hate. He and his group have shown up to numerous North Carolina LGBT events I’ve participated in, including the North Carolina Pride Festival in Durham, the Pride Charlotte Festival and the 2007 Human Rights Campaign Carolinas Gala in Charlotte. Rev. Benham and his group also managed to show up at a Soulforce Equality Ride event at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, back in April (video here).
