A rant on power, activism and ‘gay mafia’

by Matt | September 3rd, 2007 |

A common cause of burnout from many grassroots activists?

They never get the chance to effect any good change or have any good influence on local happenings… because the big-whigs keep themselves big.

Like the old adage… The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The same is true in activism. The big (i.e. the ones with money, power & influence) keep getting more and more power and the grassroots activists (i.e. the ones without the money, power & influence) never get the chance if the big-whigs veto it (even if they don’t have the authority to do such a thing).

Oh… and one last note… The gay community is not a mafia, there are no mob-bosses and one person/leader/activist should not be able to derail the work of another.

  5. Sorry to hear that Matt. Unfortunately we often have to wind up fighting against those of our own sexuality who don’t have the best intentions, as much as fighting the initial targets of homophobia.
