Gay bars closing? Eh.

by Brian | September 18th, 2007 |

Andrew Sullivan mentions that “gay bars are closing left and right across the country” in a blog post titled “End of Gay Culture Watch.”  I think “ho hum” basically sums up my reaction to it.  The need for a rigid classification between “gay bar” and “straight bar” is going away–bars are simply bars.

And the need for gay men to meet up in warehouse bars, with no name outside, and mingle with people whom they will never see in daylight, well … I’m glad to hear that’s gone.

I would much rather meet up with people at a community center, a Bible study, a picnic in the park, on my walk to work, or in a class.  There was a time when a gay bar was the only place you could “be” gay, thankfully that time has passed.

The way I see it, it’s not the end of gay culture, it’s just the beginning.

  2. I will note, however, that there are a number of straight women who might find this tendency more distressing than you do. I’ve had more than one such friend comment that they love going dancing at gay bars because they’re less likely to be harassed by some jerk who isn’t willing to take no for an answer.

  3. We have no Gay Bars as it were here in the OBX, but we do have places that are more Gay friendly then others… working on a post saying which one they are for later this week just in case anyone comes out here and interested.
