365gay.com is reporting that Kentucky governor Steve Beshear has pledged to veto the bill to prohibit state universities from extending benefits to domestic partners. Despite this, the state attorney general issued an opinion that the universities are in violation of the state’s constitutional ban against same-sex marriage and will take them to court if they do not change their policy.

Some pragmatists might argue that the governor should not waste his political capital by opposing this bill since the cards seem to be stacked against the university. The governor is, however, doing the only just thing he can. Gahandi once said that we have as much moral responsibility to refuse to cooperate with evil as we do to promote good.

Governor Beshear is a reminder of what it means to lead with conviction, I only hope our future president will be more concerned with liberty and justice than with political calculation.
