Marriage Equality

by Brian | May 22nd, 2008 |

Marriage equality matters to many readers of InterstateQ I imagine. “Democrats are for LGBT rights, Republicans are against them” seems to be the generally accepted view of American politics, but after listening to the views of the presidential front runners, I can’t help but notice they sound rather similar to one another. That’s not to say they don’t differ in important areas, just that when it comes to legal recognition of gay relationships, they seem equal. Watch for yourself after the jump.

Senator Obama:

Senator McCain:

  1. One Response to “Marriage Equality”

  2. I heard news today that former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn is on Obama’s “possibles” list for the VP slot.

As many of you may know, Nunn is the one who actively (and rabidly) pushed behind the scenes to get “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” not only enacted as Military policy, but also as codified U.S. statute (making it much harder to change than if it were simply a regulation).

If Obama takes Nunn as his VP, any chance for a truly progressive ticket built upon the notions of change will be dashed. Further, if Obama takes Nunn, any of his past statements on how inclusive and respectful he is of LGBT people will prove to be mere rhetoric, plain and simple.

Some LGBT folks are even saying they’d vote for McCain long before they ever voted for an Obama-Nunn ticket. Scary.
