Anti-gay fundie connections to hate group?

by Matt | May 24th, 2008 |

The American Family Association’s OneNewsNow.com recently ran an article titled “Schools out forever… for NC illegals.”

The article profiles Americans for Legal Immigration PAC or ALIPAC. The group is “commending” N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper for his ruling that illegal immigrants cannot enroll in state community colleges.

It is already known that the American Family Association has a strong base in North Carolina. The group has a new official affiliate, the Faith, Family, Freedom Alliance led by radically conservative wanna-be elected official Nathan Tabor. They are also associated with a number of other right-wing religious organizations including the Christian Action League of North Carolina.

Is the American Family Association also associated with ALIPAC, a group funded in part by Federation for American Immigration Reform, an organization officially listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center? (please see update below)

Why does a “family values” organization and its news network care about illegal immigrants getting an education? Wouldn’t you think a “family values” organization would support giving education to the uneducated, thereby allowing those individuals to offer better financial stability to their spouses and children? Evidently not.

UPDATE: William Gheen, ALIPAC director, has responded to the claims above. I direct your attention to his comment, where he says ALIPAC does not receive funding from FAIR, 20% of his membership is made up from minorities and that neither ALIPAC or FAIR are hate groups. He also claims the Southern Poverty Law Center is on a “smear campaign.”

  2. It’s a simple fact. If you are in the country illegally then you are in the state illegally. If you are an illegal alien then you are an illegal resident and therefore not a resident at all. You should receive no government services nor any benefits for being here. That includes admission to college.

In a decision last year, a federal judge ruled that illegal aliens have “no standing” to challenge state laws when they are in violation of federal laws. In part, his decision stated, “The Court, therefore, recognizes a new, and narrow, prudential limitation on standing. An illegal alien, in willful violation of federal immigration law, is without standing to challenge the constitutionality of a state law, when compliance with federal law would absolve the illegal alien’s constitutional dilemma—particularly when the challenged state law was enacted to discourage violation of the federal immigration law.”

Furthermore, illegal immigration IS A CRIME:
    8 U.S.C. 1325 = illegal entry.
    ” (a) Improper time or place; avoidance of examination or inspection;
misrepresentation and concealment of facts Any alien who (1) enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers, or (2) eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers, or (3) attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact, shall, for the first commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both, and, for a subsequent commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18, or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.”

The Federal Immigration and Nationality Act of 1986, made it a crime to aid & abet illegal aliens:

    Section 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii)
“Any person who . . . encourages or induces an alien to . . . reside . . . knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such . . . residence is . . . in violation of law, shall be punished as provided . . . for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs . . . fined under title 18 . . . imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both.”

Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A):
A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he:
    * assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or
    * encourages that alien to remain in the U.S. by referring him or her to an employer or by acting as employer or agent for an employer in any way, or
    * knowingly assists illegal aliens due to personal convictions.

Based on above, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper made the right decision and it shocking and disappointing that illegal aliens are not barred by all states from attending college. To enable illegal aliens to attend college is clearly, at a minimum a violation of the aiding & abetting statue.

  3. One reference to the SPLC was enough for me.
They’re no more credible than La Raza, the ACLU, or LULAC.

“We will close our borders and ports. Illegal immigration STOPS the day we take the White House! We will not provide amnesty to anyone. There will be no welfare for illegal immigrants! We will end birthright citizenship! There will be no more anchor babies!”

“It is absolutely ludicrous to say we are fighting a war on terror half way around the world when we refuse to secure our borders and ports. If I were President, I would immediately seal our borders. I would also see to it that employers in America who knowingly hire illegal aliens are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. In plain language: any employer who consciously hires illegal aliens would go to jail. They would not pass Go; they would not collect $200; they would go straight to jail.”

“..as President, I would enforce our visa rules. This means anyone who overstays their visa or otherwise violates U.S. law is immediately deported. There would be no “path to citizenship” given to any illegal alien. That means no amnesty. Not in any shape, manner, or form. I would not allow tax dollars to be used to pay for illegal aliens’ education, social services, or medical care. As President, I would end birthright citizenship for illegal aliens. There would be no “anchor babies” during my administration.”
    …………
In an update concerning the presidential candidates, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, in an interview with Bill O’Riely, said that she would continue to allow sanctuary cities to exist unchallenged. And Republican candidate John McCain has been courting the Hispanic vote of which he feels he needs to get at least 40% to win. McCain has said he will build the fence and improve border security but will provide amnesty for the millions of illegal aliens already here, although he did say that he would deport any illegal aliens with a criminal record.

    ………….
Obama said he will seek “comprehensive immigration reform,” involving secure borders, a path to legalization for millions of undocumented workers, and efforts to promote development in Mexico and Central America.

  4. Wow… the fundie nativists didn’t take long to find my post this time ’round.

Hey ya’ll… I don’t like illegal immigration either. I just question why a “family values,” Christian organization is associating itself with a group funded by a hate organization?

  5. Matt,

Please revise or remove this post. There are two major errors in your comments.

    1. ALIPAC is not and never has been funded by FAIR. There is no evidence to suggest that, just a smear attempt by the SPLC. Every dollar raised and spent by ALIPAC is online at FEC.gov and there are zero contributions by FAIR.

    2. FAIR is not a ‘Hate Group’. The SPLC came out in favor of Amnesty. FAIR and ALIPAC and others were all against AMNESTY. Since the SPLC’s side lost the fight in 2006 and 2007 they have launched a smear campaign. There is no real evidence that FAIR is a hate group. They just used to receive funds from a group that had some members that were involved in the Eugenics movement long ago.

So, you are wrong about your ALIPAC and FAIR connection and you are wrong that FAIR is a hate group.

ALIPAC is a multi ethnic group by design and practice and we do everything in our power to stay away from any racist groups or organizations as we greatly value the approximately 20% of our supporters that are minorities.

  6. I checked out the ALIPAC website…and it is scary. I’d rather send my money to a legislator who is working for me. My money doesn’t need to go to a PAC of any kind.
