My attention was drawn to an article from a Kansas TV station this morning while browsing The Washington Blade’s website. A teen in a small town of about 800 people was severely beaten inside his home by a classmate who had heard rumors he was gay. The rumor was false. The perpetrator also had with him a small explosive. His intent: To kill the 16-year-old boy.
While I was reading that article, another headline at the same Kansas TV station website caught my eye.
“Student arrested after police find explosives at his home,” it read.
In Wichita near the original beating, a 16-year-old was arrested after his plot to kill students at his high school was foiled. Explosives were found in his home.
This ain’t big city ghetto-land, y’all. Crazy, murderous rage right in the middle of white suburbia.

This reminds me of the following story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23847511/
Personally, I condemn these acts of violence. I try to teach my children not to react to insults and injuries against them, but I’ve known and talked to other Christians who do not this. They have this eye-for-eye mentality, which Jesus himself preached against. Of course, in the story you mention from Kansas, it is a small town. I grew up in a small town myself in Georgia, and I could almost guarantee that this would happen there.
Several Christians I’ve spoken to with regards to the California issue, think the 14-year-old should be set free because it was self-defense. I do my best to set them straight that both sides were guilty in this situation, and that we need to take personal responsibility for our actions. Proverbs 15:1 says, “A soft answer turns away wrath.” I pray that Christians can have a Christ-like response to these issues and not lash out in anger.
