Acceptance v. Tolerance

From a beautiful commentary (h/t DQN):

When people say they are tolerating you, it’s probably an indication they don’t like you very much, but they’re forced to deal with you for one reason or another.

So when during the vice presidential debate earlier this month Republican candidate Sarah Palin said she would be tolerant of gays and lesbians, I knew what she meant.

“If there’s any kind of suggestion at all from my answer that I would be anything but tolerant of adults in America choosing their partners, their relationships that they deem — uh, best for themselves — you know, I am tolerant,” is what she said.

What she meant was that if you are gay, you are an undesirable in this country.

  2. Thank you for that interesting insight. I did not notice or think about that perspective, but did feel that she was uncomfortable. By the way, here is a website I found that shares all the Sarah Palin dirt to support Barack Obama!

  3. I caught her comment, too. I looked at my Russian boyfriend, as we both sat there to watch, and told him that Sarah used a “nice” word to say she doesn’t like us because she still thinks we made a choice to be gay/lesbian. A choice! His mom, who was visiting us from Russia, looked at us as we talked about Sarah and said something to the tune of “I don’t like her!” Ah, even the Russians can see through her. Muah!

  4. Haha… Well, juanito, of course the Russians don’t like Palin: She wants to “keep an eye on them” and bomb them the first chance she gets. If I were Russian, I’d be afraid of her candidacy too. (Which does nothing to diminish the fact that I’m just as scared being an American.)
