A responsibility like no other

I remember the day I turned 18. My best friend Molly and I skipped class (with our teacher’s later blessing) to drive the short distance between our high school and the Forsyth County Board of Elections in downtown Winston-Salem. She’d yet to register to vote. I was celebrating my birthday.

It hasn’t been all that long since I was first allowed to vote, but I’ve participated in every election with the exception of one primary.

Voting is a responsibility like no other. What a wonderful opportunity Americans have — to cast a ballot and have their voice heard. How blessed we must be to have such a personal involvement in the direction of our country.

I hope the expected, historic turnout in my own Tar Heel State well surpasses anyone’s estimation. They say 70 percent might show up at the polls. I’m hoping for 80 or more.

I’m going to keep who I’m voting for to myself. I think this is the first time, I’ve ever done that.

REMEMBER to vote. Your future and the direction of this nation and world depend on it.

  • Matt, I voted this morning on my way to work. My boyfriend was with me, even though he can’t vote, yet, in this country (he’s Russian). As I looked about the room in this church, our designated polling place, just half a block from where we live, I saw the faces of so many young people really excited about this election. My gay and straight neighbors spent this past weekend working different areas of DC and Virginia helping people to make a decision that will make a difference. Yevgeniy has only voted once, in Russia, and he thinks our method of madness is exciting and calm (well, maybe in DC, not sure about otherplaces around the country). Anyway, I VOTED!
