Racist graffiti at NC State University
NC State will never live down its horrible reputation as the most backward, most hate-filled college campus in North Carolina. If they were located in South Carolina, their only competitor might be Bob Jones University.
In case you haven’t heard about it yet, four NC State students have admitted to painting violent, threatening and racist graffiti directed toward President-elect Barack Obama in the campus’ Free Expression Tunnel. Some of the spray-painted messages included “Shoot Obama” and “kill that n—-”, among others.
A rally of 500 students spoke out against the painting, which occurred late Tuesday night, early Wednesday morning. Other students quickly painted over the wall.
Criminal charges won’t be brought against the four students and campus police aren’t divulging their identities, citing privacy laws. The students might face disciplinary proceedings under university student conduct codes. The U.S. Secret Service assisted in the investigation due to the violent and threatening nature of the messages.

I have to take issue with the calling NCSU the “most backward, most hate-filled” campus in the state. Really?? There are a LOT of colleges in NC, and it’s hardly the worst.
Don’t forget the whole dead bear carcass with Obama signs nailed to it incident at Western Carolina University a few weeks ago. And ask any LGBT alum of Campbell University (or any other religious college) whether or not they felt comfortable being out there…most will say Heck No. And then unfortunately there are many historically black colleges in the state that sadly have no LGBT student organization at all.
I went to NCSU from 1995 to 1999 and yes there were some homophobes but they were in no way the majority. Since NCSU offers several majors that appeal to rural conservatives like Agriculture, among others, they will always have a good number of right-wing provincial students. No doubt. But step in a classroom that has students studying liberal arts, environmental science, computer science, or any other numerous other subjects, and you will find just as many progressive, open-minded college students as you will at UNC, Duke, or whatever.

RaleighRob… I’m just going off their history. NCSU has proven time and time again that Bigotry 101 is a standard lesson for incoming freshman.

At least college officials are trying, but the past few years at NC State have been nothing short of hell for anybody gay or black.

RaleighRob it may be true that the majority of the students at NC State do not share the views of the minority. The problem is that the majority does nothing. I highly recommend the book “Looking over Black Shoulders” as it really sheds the light on the issue of race like no other book past or present has. All students should be required to read this book.
