Update: Prioritizing the movement

A few days ago I blogged about my ideas on where our movement should go next. I made a priority list on what we should focus on.

My most recent post on this notion of “you haven’t suffered enough” prompted some more thinking on my part. Updated priority list below the fold…

1. Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (fully inclusive);
2. Federal hate crimes legislation (fully inclusive);
3. Repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”;
4. Repeal of Defense of Marriage Act;
5. Creation of a presidentially-appointed youth services commission (perhaps in the Department of Health and Human Services?) to focus on the high levels of LGBT youth suicide, homelessness, sexual abuse/street prostitution and high school drop-out rates; coupled with point six below…
6. State-by-state (50 State Strategy, anyone?) on securing safe schools legislation to protect vulnerable youth;
7. A smarter, wiser and more disciplined state-by-state, non-federal, preferably non-judicial approach to securing marriage equality; and
8. (Thanks to Chris Crain) Passage of a federal civil unions bill to grant all the same rights, benefits, privileges and responsibilities of marriage to same-sex couples until such a time as full marriage equality can be achieved.

I don’t know where it’d fall, but I’d also make it absolutely clear to the Boy Scouts of America: Stop discriminating against youth on the basis of their sexual orientation or risk losing your Congressional Charter and all federal, state and local tax payer-funded financial support.
