Charlotte talk radio host takes shots at local gay org’s

by Matt Comer, January 17, 2009, 12:02 am

keithlarson_wbtIn his “Lavender Folder” segment, conservative Charlotte talk radio host Keith Larson took several shots at local LGBT organizations on Thursday, Jan. 15. His targets were the N.C. Pride Band and Lesbian & Gay Band Association, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Charlotte, the Charlotte Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Queen City Gay Speed-dating, the Lesbian & Gay Community Center and local community leader, and drag performer, Roxy C. Moorecox.

Larson also spoke on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” asking what it meant to “serve openly.” He said gays wanted a lavender armband or ribbon to signify their sexual orientation. He also poked fun at the praise heaped on Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) by LGBT employees at the U.S. State Department after her testimony at her Senate confirmation hearing for Secretary of State. (Audio included after the jump.)

It should be noted that Larson’s information regarding the Film Festival is incorrect. This week, the festival, which was to feature films at the end of this month, was pushed back to early spring.

Larson’s show airs 9 a.m. to Noon weekdays on Charlotte’s WBT 1110 AM/99.3 FM.

The audio (.mp3) can be listened to below. It is approximately 14 minutes in length. It is slightly edited to remove commercials.

After listening to the radio excerpt from Keith larson I am literally disheartened and sickened. I guess I was nieve and thought Charlotte was further along in its tollerance than what this broadcast would imply. I really can not beleive the LGBT community and its allies were not up in arms after this infuriating broadcast. Has anyone made the radio station know how this broadcast was openly biased and downright hateful toward our community? I still cant beleive what I just heard. Unbeleivable.

  • There is hardly a day that goes by that Keith Larson isn’t openly hateful toward the LGBT community. Its a very sad commentary on Charlotte. The LGBT community should have run this guy out of town years ago but they seem to do nothing. A little organization might be in order. Anybody up for the fight ?

  • Just stumbled here – One time, he interviewed local pastor Steve Ayers of McGill Baptist Church who baptized 2 gay men, and seemed to be supportive, especially when people who were intolerant and against the church’s decision called in to speak to the pastor. This, however, shows his complete ignorance and intolerance. How do we make him go away or at least find more about our community before he blasts it? Does he know anything about the Lesbian and Gay Community Center or does he just Google?
