You know... my wife and I got married in San Francisco prior to Prop 8. We volunteered for Partners in Peace last year, and we were planning on just enjoying Pride this year, since it seems we've been protesting and defending our love ever since, and we just wanted to have fun at our first Pride as a married couple. However, it looks like we'll be volunteering.

Here is the truth about the Brownsville Revival. It seems as inauthentic as Mr. Brown's claim to love gay people.

It is amazing that Mr. Brown does not have a clue how obnoxious and offensive the name "God Has a Better Way" truly is.

1) It assumes that gay people do not believe in God. That they are "against" God and rebelling in some way. Of course, the only thing that drives many gay people away from God are judgmental people like Mr. Brown.

2) It is shocking how arrogant one must be to tell other people, particularly gay people of faith, that their version of God is a "better way." No, it's not "better" just because you say it is. Furthermore, God would not appreciate the fake science that you and Focus on the Family use to justify your prejudice.

3) I'm not sure why Mr. Brown can't simply advertise for gay followers on Craig's List. That way, interested people come to him. Instead, he confronts people who are really looking for a good time and a nice day of relaxation. After a hard week of work, do they really need or want Brown and his minions telling them that they either have no God or that their relationship with God is inferior? Can't people have a day at the park without being erroneously told they are sick, defective, sinners and second class citizens? (After Gov. Mark Sanford,Sen. John Ensign, Sarah Palin, Matthew Manning, Newt Gingrich, etc., I'm not sure where these holier-than-thou hypocrites have the credibility to preach, anyway)

4) In this economy, there must be a soup kitchen that Mr. Brown can go to on that day. But, I guess poverty and homelessness are not sexy enough issues. Instead, these folks want to bully, harass and insult people who just want to be left alone.

5) That brings me to a simple point. Why is Mr. Brown and his followers such busybodies? Why is it so difficult for them to let people be? Why are they compelled to insult peoples' families and beliefs (in the name of love) who are harming no one? What deficiency or emptiness lies in the human soul of someone compelled to bully a minority who just want to have a few hours where they can be free to be themselves? Real people of faith would not engage in such behavior, because they are secure in their beliefs. It is people who lack faith who must ostentatiously and obtrusively proclaim how faithful they are at all times - even when they are not invited to do so.

6) That brings me to the point of Brown's ineffectiveness. When I recently spoke in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Brown took to the microphone several times during the Q&A and was just the most obnoxious and demanding person I've ever seen. He rudely injected himself into the conversation, to the point where the moderator had to step in. He still prattled on, confusing his own paranoia with legitimate persecution. It finally got the point when the audience started booing and telling him to sit down. It was not that they opposed his freedom of speech. It was that his apparent narcissism allowed Brown to believe that he had the freedom to speak twice as much - and three times as loud - as everyone else. Brown made a horrible impression in Grand Rapids and surely drove many people away from all forms of religion. I'm not sure that was his intention, but that is what he accomplished.

7) Brown can twist and spin the truth all he wants. His violent use of imagery and language is deplorable and abusive. He thinks he makes it okay by smiling and telling people he loves them, after hurling insults wrapped in pseudo-theology. Few people are buying it. Brown is just a man who hears the echo of the choir and thinks he is making a huge difference - when he is barely making a dent.

8) Mr. Brown - if you are so happy and at peace with your theology, then lead by example and be a witness. Irritating people at Pride is not endearing you to anyone. It does not make you brave. It does not make you an effective preacher. All it does is make 99 percent of the people think you are an extremist who clearly had too much time on his hands.

9) The truth is, "Gays Have a Better Way". The GLBT community welcomes all people unconditionally (except those who threaten and insult them - such as yourself). GLBT people of faith also worship God, without telling others that their God (or lack of one) is inferior. You should emulate the MCC and you'd be much more effective.

10) What you call a "better way", Mr. Brown, are simply bad habits, poor manners and boorish behavior. You really should reexamine your approach. You might be surprised, but you have much to learn.

Having heard Dr. Brown at a presentation and question/answer period at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, MI I have to note a few things. After inciting thousands of his sheep to bombard GVSU with emails requesting to place him on our discussion panel so he could discuss "reparative" therapy, he ended up using none of the mic time (as an audience member during the quesiton period) propagating his views. He was only interested in pointing out that he thought liberal education is hypocritical if it doesn't involve all views at all times. He was a speaker at a Focus on the Family event a few days later, but didn't even know where or when it was. To me, he clearly came off as someone JUST entering this topic, just releasing a book, and wanting to promote it... just another blind guide. I'm sorry this article was written so much about him, and that I am even responding to it. He is not interested in genuine dialogue.
