Former UNCG prof & LGBT historian to speak at NC GALA event

An openly gay and former professor at UNCG, historian John D’Emilio will be the featured speaker at the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Attorney’s 2006 Continuing Legal Education seminar on March 17, 2006. The seminar will be held at the Durham Arts Council (120 Morris Street) at 3pm.

D’Emilio, who currently is a professor at the University of Chicago, is an expert on LGBT rights and community history. He is the Founding Director of the Policy Institute of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and was cited by the Supreme Court in its landmark decision in Lawrence v. Texas (2003).

Professor Shannon Gilreath, from Wake Forest University, will also be a speaker at the seminar. Gilreath is a professor of law and taught a women and gender studies course on “Sexuality and the Law” during the last academic semester. Gilreath also serves as the only openly LGBT member of the City of Winston-Salem Human Relations Commission.
