Anti-Gay Politicians Watch 5: UNCG Red State Day

by Matt | March 27th, 2006 |

The UNCG College Republicans will have their “Red State Day” today, March 27, 2006. This is the first event in their week-long “Morals Week”.

According to a post on the UNCG CR blog, the following politicians/candidates will be making appearances:

  • Guilford County GOP Chairman Marcus Kindley
  • NC House Representative Candidate Michael Moore (District 65)
  • NC Attorney General Candidate Bob Crumley
  • NC State Representative Jim Rumley (NC-59)
  • NC State Representative Dale Folwell (NC-74)
  • NC State Representative Laura Wiley (NC-61)
  • NC State Representative John Blust (NC-32)
  • US Representative Candidate Vernon Robinson (US House NC-13)

Notice the last one… Vernon Robinson (the subject of three Anti-Gay Politicians Watch posts so far… and most likely the subject of more [more info here]).

I don’t know about all of those folks, but I know that both Marcus Kindley and Dale Folwell have been pretty negatively outspoken when it comes to LGBT issues. I’ll just have to wait to talk to these folks today (expect a post on it tonight).

I’ll be there with the CR’s (many of whom I am good friends with) in order to hear what these Republican politicians have to say. And… of course, I’ll surely be advocating on behalf of LGBT Americans, so I hope none of my CR friends are expecting me to keep my mouth shut. I’ll have plenty of questions lined up for all of these “good ole’ boys”.

And… if you are wondering what I’ll be asking the candidates and representatives, here are the questions. These questions will also appear in a letter I plan on sending to candidates running for office in the Triad area:

  • Would you support adding the terms “sexual orientation” and “gender-identity” to the non-discrimination/anti-harassment policies of the governmental body for which you are running?
  • What is your professional opinion on offering health-care benefits to partners of LGBT government employees already available to the legal spouses of government employees?
  • Would you support banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender-identity in such areas as housing, public accommodation and public healthcare?
  • What is your professional opinion on the existence and presence of gay-straight student organizations which help to raise awareness and educate students on matters of respect and tolerance within public schools?
  • What is your professional opinion on attempts to limit the rights of LGBT citizens, such as the amendment to ban recognition of marriages by same-sex couples? If in support of such limitations on marriage recognition, would you ever be in favor of similarly granted rights and privileges in the form of civil unions?
  • What is your professional opinion on attempts to limit adoption by LGBT individuals and/or couples?

I may not get around to all these questions or to all the people who will be there but I’ll certainly try.

UPDATE / EDIT (1:45am, 3/27): The LGBT Issues Questionnaire which I will be giving to the elected representatives and candidates today can be viewed here. I will also use this same questionnaire throughout the 2006 Mid-term Election season. I will be introducing myself and giving this questionnaire to the representatives and candidates today. I will post the responses later tonight or tomorrow, including those individuals who choose not to participate in filling out the questionnaire.
