LCR calls for support of gay-friendly Republican

by Matt | March 28th, 2006 |

Patrick Guerriero, the President of the Log Cabin Republicans, is calling for support in order to help Congressman Joe Schwarz (7th District, Michigan), an LGBT-friendly Republican who stood in opposition to the Federal Marrige Amendment. Congressman Schwarz, publicly opposed the FMA saying: “Same-sex couples deserve basic human rights and equality.” Because of his outspokenness against the measure, Shwarz is now coming under attack from his anti-gay colleagues:

Congressman Joe Schwarz is a Vietnam Veteran, a doctor, a committed public servant, and a loyal Republican with common sense values and the courage to stand up for what’s right. Schwarz was elected to represent Michigan’s conservative 7th district in the House of Representatives in 2004 after winning a fierce six-way GOP primary. During his primary battle, Joe Schwarz publicly opposed the anti-family Federal Marriage Amendment stating, “Same-sex couples deserve basic human rights and equality.” Two of his opponents ran TV commercials criticizing Schwarz’s position, but he fought back and stood up for fairness.

Congressman Joe Schwarz has demonstrated his commitment to basic fairness by joining 29 of his Republican colleagues in supporting Hate Crimes legislation during the 109th Congress. His support for equality has led an anti-gay Republican to challenge him in the GOP primary. Former pastor and State Representative Tim Walberg is using gay and lesbian families as a wedge issue in his effort to unseat Congressman Schwarz.

It is time for all Log Cabin members to join Republican leaders in Congress and in Michigan to save one of our heroes. Help us defend true GOP values by working to re-elect Congressman Joe Schwarz.

We need your help to raise $10,000 for LCR PAC by March 30th so we can help Congressman Schwarz and other candidates. Help prevent supporters of the anti-family constitutional amendment from taking his seat and gaining other seats in Congress.

I guess not all Republicans are anti-gay, lol. I’m just kidding, I already knew that. But, yeah… click on the link and support Schwarz. We need as many allies as we can get in Congress, Democrat OR Republican.

Disclaimer: For all you folks who think I’m a Log Cabin Republican… Get over it… I’m just inclusive, that’s all. I’m still a proud Democrat. :)

  3. Now, Now, Now… one of the greatest rules in politics is to know who your friends are… even if you might not agree on everything for which they stand. LCR’s have the same goal as any other LGBT political group and they should be just accepted in the LGBT activism/advocacy/lobbying/political circle as much as groups like Stonewall Dems, HRC, and NGLTF.

  4. It is unfortunate that Congressman Schwarz’s district borders mine here in Michigan. Otherwise, he would be high on my list. Nevertheless, I shall support his efforts for re-election.

My Cousin, who resides in Washington D.C., would consider himself a Log Cabin Republican and in the past we have gotten into arguements on the issue. Now I respect his viewpoint and understand that many Log Cabin Republicans are simply fiscally conservative, but like all political viewpoints, theirs runs the gamut as well.

By the way, I appreciate your comprehensive coverage on the Equality Ride. I missed their stop in Tulsa, OK by two days. I would have been elated to stand by them as they stood vigil outside Oral Roberts.
