Conservative Rev. Falwell backs some gay rights

According to an article on the Washington Blade, the Reverend Jerry Falwell has “come out” in support of some rights for LGBT Americans.

The Human Rights Campaign, or so it is reported, is formally thanking the Rev. Falwell for his comments.

On an August 5th appearance on MSNBC’s “The Situation with Tucker Carlson,” the REv. Falwell said:

“I may not agree with the lifestyle, but that has nothing to do with the civil rights of that … part of our constituency.”

The Rev. Falwell also said that equal access to housing and employment were in no way considered “special” rights, but instead were considered “basic” rights.

The article also states:

“Civil rights for all Americans, black, white, red, yellow, the rich, poor, young, old, gay, straight, et cetera, is not a liberal or conservative value,” Falwell went on to say. “It’s an American value that I would think that we pretty much all agree on.”

So, it seems as though the Rev. Falwell either knows how to carefully play the political card game or he has become, in some way, more compassionate toward the LGBT population in America.

Either way, I hope that his words will be a way for the conservative, anti-gay right to come just a little bit closer to allowing LGBT people to have the same basic rights as everyone else.
