SafeSchoolsNC plans LGBTQ Youth Conference

by Matt | May 27th, 2006 |

SafeSchoolsNC, a state-wide education, advocacy and research group focused on LGBTQ youth in North Carolina K-12 schools, has announced that they will be holding a state-wide conference for LGBTQ youth in October 2006.

The YES-NCGSAN (Youth Empowerment Conference for North Carolina Gay-Straight Alliances Network) Conference is a joint project between the UNC-Chapel Hill Student Affiars LGBT Office, the UNCG-Chapel Hill GLBTSA student group and SafeSchoolsNC. The conference will take place October 6 - 8, 2006, at UNC-Chapel Hill and will feature at least two key-note speakers, seminars, workshops and networking opportunities for youth around the state.

According to SafeSchoolsNC Executive Director Melissa Wiess:

This will be a chance for students who are in GSAs, who want to start a GSA, or who are interested in making their schools safer places for LGBTQ youth, to come together, network, attend and lead workshops, socialize and strategize about how to make schools across NC safe.

As of now, SafeSchoolsNC is still looking for people willing to lead workshops and would love to have many of their workshops led by the youth themselves. SafeSchoolsNC is also looking for sponsors for the event.
